If you haven’t seen it, you’ve been told to see it. There isn’t much to say about this film that hasn’t already been said, but Monty Python and the Holy Grail is the first feature-length film by the Python crew (composed of John Cleese, Graham Chapman, Michael Palin, Eric Idle, Terry Jones and Terry Gilliam) and is often considered by lists of all sorts to be among the best comedies of all time.
The film loosely follows the legend of King Arthur. Arthur (Chapman) along with his squire, Patsy (Gilliam), recruits his Knights of the Round Table, including Sir Bedevere the Wise (Jones), Sir Lancelot the Brave (Cleese), Sir Robin the Not-Quite-So-Brave-As-Sir-Lancelot (Idle) and Sir Galahad the Pure (Palin). They are all instructed by God to seek out the Holy Grail. Concurrently, in a manner of “breaking the fourth wall”, a modern-day historian is describing the Arthurian legend for a television program. His involvement in the film eventually triggers a police investigation that bends the rules of the space-time continuum as we know it.
And from there the silliness just ensues and ensues and ensues.
