THE THING
Conceptual Story Boarded Designs
Mentor Huebner (c) 1980
Charcoal on Vellum 8.5” x 11” & 18” x 24”

Mentor Huebner was the Primary Production Illustrator THE THING. It was his Conceptual Design for THE THING that was ultimately used by the production.

Mentor Huebner (19 July 1917 Los Angeles, California - 19 March 2001 Burbank, California) was a leading Hollywood production illustrator who did storyboards, production art and creative concepts for more than 250 films, including King Kong (1976), Blade Runner (1982) and Francis Ford Coppola’s Dracula (1992).

Mentor Huebner created about 40,000 drawings and conceptual designs for 250 film productions, much of his work easily rivaled and surpassed drawings done by historical Fine Arts Masters. His drawings were used as a guide to assist Directors in ‘calling the shots’. Mentor choreographed complicated scenes technically precise and artistically sound that were easy to read ‘visuals’, presented to each department head and known to the film crew as the production’s “Bible.”

Examples of Mentor’s unique talent can be found in the MGM Anniversary Edition DVD celebrating the making of the film classic “Fiddler on the Roof”. On this MGM DVD Mentor’s designs are displayed above the actual film footage that was ‘shot’ . Scene for scene, his designs were followed exactly. Sadly, though not surprisingly, his name has been conveniently left off the credits.

To paraphrase an old saying; “The proof of the pudding is in the talent. The talent and who called the visual shots is in the drawings.”

MGM decided to display the drawings on that DVD! It’s fascinating to see how Mentor’s drawings and the scenes shot are identical. MGM superimposed the film footage exactly over Mentor’s drawings. The result proves the worthiness of the drawings and Mentor’s views. It’s incredible to see how Mentor’s drawings were followed exactly. Mentor called the shots pretty good.

“MY FILMMAKING EDUCATION CONSISTED OF FINDING OUT WHAT FILMMAKERS I LIKED WERE WATCHING, THEN SEEING THOSE FILMS. I LEARNED THE TECHNICAL STUFF FROM BOOKS AND MAGS, AND WITH THE NEW TECHNOLOGY YOU CAN WATCH ENTIRE MOVIES ACCOMPANIED BY COMMENTARY FROM THE DIRECTOR. YOU CAN LEARN MORE FROM JOHN STURGES' AUDIO TRACK ON THE 'BAD DAY AT BLACK ROCK' LASERDISC THAN YOU CAN IN 4 YEARS OF FILM SCHOOL. FILM SCHOOL IS A COMPLETE CON, BECAUSE THE INFORMATION IS THERE IF YOU WANT IT.” P.T. Anderson
